What is a Percentage?

A percentage is a mathematical way to express a number as a fraction of 100. It is commonly used to describe proportions, comparisons, and relationships between numbers. The percent symbol (%) represents “per hundred.” For example:

  • 35% is equal to 0.35 in decimal form.

  • 35% is the same as saying 35 per 100.

Example:

If 25 out of 50 students are male:

  • 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5

  • 0.5 × 100 = 50%
Thus, 50% of the students are male.

Percentage Formula

The percentage formula relates three key values:

P × V1 = V2

Where:

  • P = Percentage (as a decimal during calculation)

  • V1 = First value (the base number)

  • V2 = Result after applying the percentage

Example:

What is 5% of 30?
P × 30 = 1.5
P = 1.5 ÷ 30 = 0.05
0.05 × 100 = 5%

Note: When calculating manually, percentages must be converted into decimals. The calculator does this automatically.

Percentage Difference Formula

The percentage difference measures the relative difference between two values.

Formula:
Percentage Difference =
|V1 – V2| ÷ ((V1 + V2) ÷ 2) × 100

Example:

|10 – 6| ÷ (10 + 6)/2 = 4 ÷ 8 = 0.5
0.5 × 100 = 50%

Percentage Change Formula (Increase or Decrease)

Percentage change shows how much a value increases or decreases relative to its starting point.

Formula:
|New Value – Original Value| ÷ Original Value × 100

Example:

Increase:
500 increased by 10% → 500 × (1 + 0.1) = 550

Decrease:
500 decreased by 10% → 500 × (1 – 0.1) = 450
