This calculator follows the international age system, commonly used in Western countries, where a person’s age increases by one on each birthday. For example, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old until their next birthday, at which point they turn 4. However, age calculation methods vary significantly across cultures. In traditional East Asian systems, such as the Chinese age reckoning, newborns start at age 1, and everyone’s age increases by one at the Lunar New Year rather than on individual birthdays. This means a baby born just before the Lunar New Year would be considered 2 years old only days after birth. Additionally, some cultures count age differently based on the current year. In Western systems, a 20-year-old is in their 20th year of life, while in Korean age reckoning, the same person would be considered in their 21st year. When calculating age in months and days, ambiguities can arise, particularly around month-end dates. For instance, counting from February 28 to March 31 can yield either one month (if both dates are treated as month-ends) or one month and three days (if counting exact day intervals). This calculator uses the latter method for precision, applying the same logic to similar cases like April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30. While both interpretations are valid, this tool prioritizes consistent day-based calculations for clarity.
