Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your investment type. Low risk savings accounts and CDs typically return 1% to 3% annually. Balanced bond and stock portfolios return 4% to 7%. Stock market index funds historically average 8% to 10% over long periods. For conservative planning use 6% to 7% as a realistic estimate regardless of investment type.
Compound frequency is how often your interest earnings are added back to your balance and start earning their own interest. Monthly compounding is the most common for investments and savings accounts and gives slightly better results than annual compounding. The more frequent the compounding the faster your money grows — though the difference between monthly and daily is minimal over typical timeframes.
Contributing at the beginning of each period means your contribution earns interest for the full period — resulting in a slightly higher end balance. Contributing at the end is the default standard used by most savings and retirement accounts. The difference is small but beginning of period contributions can add meaningful extra growth over very long timeframes.
This calculator uses standard compound interest formulas used by financial institutions worldwide. Results are accurate for the inputs provided. However real world investment returns vary year to year — markets do not grow at a fixed rate every year. Use this tool for planning and goal setting but always consult a qualified financial advisor before making major investment decisions.
