Your weight alone doesn’t reveal how healthy or fit you are. Two people can weigh the same but have very different muscle, bone, and fat compositions. That’s where lean body mass (LBM) comes in—it tells you how much of your weight is everything except fat.

Our Lean Body Mass Calculator uses multiple scientific formulas—Boer, James, Hume, and Peters (for children)—to estimate your LBM instantly. Simply enter your weight, height, gender, and age, and compare results across different methods.

What is Lean Body Mass (LBM)?

Lean body mass is your total body weight minus body fat. It includes muscles, bones, organs, blood, water, and skin. On average, lean mass makes up 60–90% of body weight, with men usually having higher percentages than women.

LBM is not only important for fitness goals but also for medical purposes. For example, some medications—like certain anesthetics—are dosed based on lean mass rather than total weight.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator computes your estimated lean body mass (LBM) using several widely accepted formulas. This gives you a more complete picture of your body composition and allows you to compare results.

Lean Body Mass Formulas

1. Boer Formula (Adults)

  • Men: eLBM = 0.407W + 0.267H – 19.2

  • Women: eLBM = 0.252W + 0.473H – 48.3

2. James Formula (Adults)

  • Men: eLBM = 1.1W – 128 × (W² ÷ H²)

  • Women: eLBM = 1.07W – 148 × (W² ÷ H²)

3. Hume Formula (Adults)

  • Men: eLBM = 0.32810W + 0.33929H – 29.5336

  • Women: eLBM = 0.29569W + 0.41813H – 43.2933

4. Peters Formula (Children ≤ 14 years)

  • eECV = 0.0215 × W^0.6469 × H^0.7236

  • eLBM = 3.8 × eECV

Variables:

  • W = weight (kg)

  • H = height (cm)

Example Calculation

A 180 cm tall, 60 kg male:

  • Boer Formula: 53.3 kg (≈ 89% LBM)

  • James Formula: 51.8 kg (≈ 86% LBM)

  • Hume Formula: 51.2 kg (≈ 85% LBM)

This shows how results can differ slightly depending on the formula, but all give a reliable estimate of lean mass.
